Project Time Calculator

Elapsed Time Calculator: Find the Time Between Two Times

Enter a start and end time, with dates if you need them, to get the elapsed time in hours, minutes and seconds, decimal hours and total minutes.

Quick answer

Elapsed time is the end time minus the start time. From 9:15 to 17:40 it is 8 hours 25 minutes, or 8.42 decimal hours. If the end clock time is earlier than the start, the interval crossed midnight, so add 24 hours to the end first. Add dates for intervals longer than a day.

How to read your result

Enter a start time and an end time for each interval. Dates are optional: leave both empty for a same-day or overnight interval, or fill both in for an interval that spans several days. Use "Add interval" to sum several intervals, such as the morning and afternoon of a working day.

  • Elapsed time (h:mm:ss): hours, minutes and seconds between the times. Hours can exceed 24 when dates are used.
  • Decimal hours: the same total as a decimal number, useful for timesheets and invoices.
  • Total minutes and total seconds: the whole interval in one unit.
  • Days, hours, minutes, seconds: the same total split by unit.

Each row shows its own elapsed time; the total at the bottom of the table adds the rows. Clock times are treated as one continuous timeline with no daylight-saving changes. Use the work hours calculator when you also need to take off an unpaid break.

Elapsed time formulas

elapsed = end − start    (add 24 hours to end if end < start and no dates are given)

with dates: elapsed = (end date + end time) − (start date + start time)

decimal hours = seconds ÷ 3600    total minutes = seconds ÷ 60

All arithmetic is done in whole seconds, so there is no rounding until the numbers are displayed. When intervals are added, the totals are the sum of the seconds of each row.

Worked examples

Each example uses numbers you can load into the calculator above; the results match the tool exactly.

Example 1 (simple): 9:15 to 17:40

  • 17:40 − 9:15 = 8 hours 25 minutes (8:25:00)
  • Decimal hours = 505 ÷ 60 = 8.4167
  • Total minutes = 505

These are the calculator's default inputs.

Example 2 (realistic): an overnight interval from 22:30 to 06:15

The end is earlier than the start, so the interval crosses midnight. From 22:30 to midnight is 1 hour 30 minutes; from midnight to 06:15 is 6 hours 15 minutes.

  • Elapsed = 7 hours 45 minutes (7:45:00)
  • Decimal hours = 7.75

Example 3: across dates, 2 November 08:00 to 4 November 17:30

With both dates filled in, the calculator subtracts the full date and time.

  • Elapsed = 57 hours 30 minutes (57:30:00)
  • Split by unit = 2 days 9 hours 30 minutes
  • Decimal hours = 57.5

Example 4: two intervals added together

A working day split by lunch: 9:00 to 12:30 and 13:15 to 17:45.

  • Morning = 3 hours 30 minutes; afternoon = 4 hours 30 minutes
  • Total = 8 hours 0 minutes (8:00:00)

Elapsed time versus work hours

Elapsed time is the plain distance between two moments. It does not know about breaks, shifts or pay rules. If the two times are a start and finish of a shift, the work hours calculator subtracts the unpaid break and gives daily, weekly and yearly totals. For common patterns, the paid hours for common shifts are already worked out.

If you need to add or subtract several durations that are not tied to clock times, such as a list of tasks you timed, use the add and subtract time calculator instead.

How to calculate elapsed time by hand

  1. Write both times in 24-hour form. 5:40 PM is 17:40.
  2. If the end is earlier than the start, add 24 hours to the end. 06:15 becomes 30:15.
  3. Subtract the minutes first. 40 − 15 = 25 minutes. If the result is negative, borrow an hour (60 minutes) from the hours.
  4. Subtract the hours. 17 − 9 = 8 hours.
  5. Combine them. 8 hours 25 minutes. Divide the minutes by 60 for decimal hours: 25 ÷ 60 = 0.4167.

Assumptions, limits and common mistakes

Assumptions and limits

  • Time zones and daylight-saving changes are not applied. All times are on one continuous clock.
  • Without dates, an interval is assumed to be shorter than 24 hours. Enter both dates for longer intervals.
  • Equal start and end times without dates give zero elapsed time, not 24 hours.
  • Seconds are supported only when your browser lets you enter them in the time field.

Common mistakes

  • Subtracting 06:15 from 22:30 gives a negative number. Add 24 hours to the end time when an interval passes midnight.
  • Treating minutes like decimals. 8:25 is not 8.25 hours; it is 8.4167 hours.
  • Mixing AM and PM. 12:00 AM is midnight and 12:00 PM is noon. The 24-hour clock avoids the confusion.
  • Forgetting a date on one side. Enter both dates or neither.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate elapsed time?

Subtract the start time from the end time. For 9:15 to 17:40, 17:40 − 9:15 is 8 hours 25 minutes. If the end is earlier than the start, add 24 hours to the end first.

How do I find the time between two times?

Enter the start and end time and read the elapsed time. The calculator handles minutes, seconds and overnight intervals, and gives the result as h:mm:ss, decimal hours and total minutes.

How do I calculate time elapsed across midnight?

Add 24 hours to the end time. From 22:30 to 06:15 is 30:15 − 22:30 = 7 hours 45 minutes. The calculator does this automatically when the end time is earlier than the start and no dates are entered.

How do I calculate the duration between two dates and times?

Fill in both dates and both times. From 2 November 08:00 to 4 November 17:30 is 57 hours 30 minutes, or 2 days 9 hours 30 minutes.

How do I add several time intervals together?

Use "Add interval" to enter each start and end time. The total row sums them. 9:00 to 12:30 plus 13:15 to 17:45 is 8 hours.

What is the difference between elapsed time and hours worked?

Elapsed time is the raw gap between two times. Hours worked usually subtract unpaid breaks. Use the work hours calculator for that.

Why is my elapsed time 0?

The start and end times are the same and no dates are entered. Add dates if the interval is exactly 24 hours or longer.
